JOHN ALLERTON
Age: 60

River angling legend John Allerton is putting his running water skills to good use on commercials by taking the matches at Lindholme Lakes apart on the waggler.

Amiable Yorkshireman John has racked up an impressive 62 top three placings at the doncaster complex this year (2009), with 11 coming in the past four weeks, including five wins.

During a hectic fortnight, the selby-based rod managed to land top spot in three events with netts of 99lb 13 oz and 105lb twice.

In the Angling Times: 50 years of Angling Times, Keith Arthur Lists John Allerton in his top 10 Angling icons, and The greatest match team ever edition.

“Waggler working wonders for Allerton at Lindholme Lakes” Angling times

“I thought I could fish the stick float intill I drew next to John at the Trent. Unbelievable controll and accuracy and now still doing the business on commercial fisheries” Keith Arthur.

“Too many people think John was just a stick float angler, but while he is deadly on that method, theres much more to the man than that. He is a brilliant waggler man, and I’ve seen him take apart festivals in Ireland feederfishing for bream. He’s even the man to beat at commercial carp fisheries today” Dick Clegg

“John Allerton is the angler who has given me the biggest hammering on my favourite method” – Keith Arthur

5mm piece of pole section. Comes in handy for adding a pellet into the bait band. I put the rubber band over the 5mm section, rest the pellet and pull the band over the pellet. Takes 2 seconds and works everytime!

John’s Top Tip for Lindholme.

“I’ve been feeding 6mm pellets with the same banded pellet on the hook. If it’s deep to an island, I’ve been fishing off the deck, and light 0.10mm (2lb) hooklengths have also been key to getting plenty of bits at lindholme”
